The Big Ten West contest between the Wildcats and the Cornhuskers will open the 2022 college football season and will kick off the five-game Aer Lingus College Football Classic series. For both teams, it will be the first football game ever played outside the United States and anticipation is high.

    A global stage

"This is an incredible opportunity for our entire University community, from student-athletes to coaches, alumni and fans," said Pat Fitzgerald, Dan and Susan Jones Family Head Football Coach. "We are thrilled that our program will get to experience the beautiful Irish culture, while we continue to help grow the game of college football on a global stage."

And the feeling is just as strong in the Nebraska camp, according to Athletic Director Bill Moos. "The young men in our program have been looking forward to this trip and we are happy to provide them this memorable experience. I know our great Husker fan base will be excited as well, and the opportunity to travel to Ireland to see their team compete on an international stage will truly be special."

Nebraska and Northwestern will compete for the Keough-Naughton trophy that bears the names of two powerhouses of Irish America, Don Keough and Martin Naughton.

    Aviva Stadium, Dublin

    "Bowl game"

The game takes place in the magnificent bowl-shaped Aviva Stadium – home to the Irish Rugby Football Union and the Republic of Ireland national football team, and is Ireland's first and only UEFA Elite Stadium.

It’s also a concert venue, and has hosted some of the biggest names in music (including Madonna, Rhianna and Neil Diamond). So with a capacity of 48,000, expect the stadium to be packed with excited football fans on August 27th.

    Beyond the stadium

Frequently voted as one of the world’s friendliest cities, Dublin will extend a warm welcome to fans traveling to celebrate the big game. Expect all the usual college football fanfare, from marching bands to cheerleaders.

Of course, no football game would be complete without tailgate parties before and after the game – games, music, food, dancing, and maybe a few surprises. Get ready for an epic football weekend!

And when the football is over, it's time to go exploring! Take your time and see what Dublin has to offer. Or go further afield and discover the romantic castles and ancient standing stones of Ireland's Ancient East, the rugged coastline of the Wild Atlantic Way, and the stunning landscapes and vibrant spirit of Northern Ireland.
